'The Rosie O' Donnell Show' became the most popular daytime chat show of its time, winning an emmy in 1998 for Outstanding Talk Show. It focused less on the debate of people's personal issues and more on live performance, interviews and entertainment.
O'Donnell met her partner Kelli Carpenter, in 1998 through her brother Daniel. The two were married in 2004, in San Francisco. The marriage coincided with an announcement by President George W Bush that there would be an amendment to the constitution that would ban gay marriage. O' Donnell said: "I think the actions of the president are, the most vile and hateful words ever spoken by a sitting president, I am stunned and I'm horrified....And, you know, I think a lot of people will be going to San Francisco."
She is an active spokesperson for gay rights. The couple now have 4 children, and it was her role as a gay parent which made her come out in 2002. In an interview with Diane Sawyer, she commented: "I don't think America knows what a gay parent looks like. I am a gay parent." 2006 STONEWALL AWARDS

Stonewall's first annual awards, designed to celebrate the range of positive contributions being made by individuals and organisations to the lives of gay people in Britain, will be presented by Sir Ian McKellen. Exclusively sponsored by Barclays, the first winners will be announced at London's Royal Academy on Thursday 2 November.
The 'Stonewall & Barclays Community Group of the Year' is being chosen by a vote among more than 5,000 Stonewall supporters from across Britain and the winner will receive a cheque for £5,000 to support its work. The winners of the six other awards will be selected by a judging panel including novelist Stella Duffy, actor Simon Callow, Lt Cdr Craig Jones of the Royal Navy and entertainer Amy Lamé ….
