De Rossi was born Amanda Lee Rogers in Victoria, Australia. As a child, she modelled for print and TV commercials. She took the name Portia de Rossi when she was 15. “In retrospect, I think it was largely due to my struggle about being gay. Everything just didn’t fit. I was trying to find things I could identify myself with, and it started with my name. I picked Portia because I was a Shakespeare fan (In The Merchant of Venice Portia comes to the rescue of Antonio and Bassanio in their time of need) and  De Rossi because I was Australian and thought that an exotic Italian name would suit me more than Amanda Rogers. When you live in Australia, Europe is far away, so fascinating, so stylish, cultured and sophisticated."

She attracted international attention when she joined the main cast of the Ally McBeal in 1998 playing lawyer Nelle Porter. After a decade of hard work, de Rossi is winning real recognition, not only for her long golden tresses, but for her wonderful talent: Sirens, Scream 2, Arrested Development, Nip/Tuck.

In May 2007, she was listed as one of “100 Most Beautiful” in People Magazine. De Rossi and partner, Ellen DeGeneres are listed in the Power A-List couples in 2007 and married in California in August 2008. ...more...
