Of course the UKs LGB scene is male dominated! Especially if youre talking about gay bars in central London or Manchester, then yes, youll find many more male-run and owned venues. But in the last ten years Ive really noticed an increase in women-run events for lesbians, which are maybe womens equivalent of the scene. These days Im getting asked to perform at book and music festivals, lesbian-themed conferences, as well as in theatres and cabaret venues around the country. There is also an age issue here because bars often attract younger lesbians whereas older women over thirty find themselves creating other groups for socializing, like Kenric (www.kenric.org.uk). ..more...

Marie Antoinette: Lesbian Icon: Who? When? Where?

She was originally christened Maria Antonia, and was the fourteenth child of the then Emperor and Empress of Austria - Joseph and Maria-Theresa of Hapsburg.

The young princess grew up amongst much indulgence at Schonbrünn Palace, with many siblings and tutors to guide her. Little else is known of this early life, and whether or not she was happy throughout this period depends greatly on which account you read. Perhaps she was the favourite daughter of the Austrian monarchs, or perhaps the decadent lifestyle of her huge immediate family offered her little in the way of emotional support and attention.

She did not remain at Schonbrünn for long, however. At the age of 14, she was married off to the dauphin (crown prince) of France, at the royal palace in Versailles. She was stripped of her Austrian style clothes, modelled into the image of a French princess, and it was from this point on that she was to become known as Marie Antoinette. ...more...
